Iginio Massari has opened a "maritozzeria" in Milan with his children, a place dedicated exclusively to maritozzi. The establishment is named Maritz and will offer maritozzi in a variety of flavors. Starting in Milan, Massari and his family are eager to expand to other cities, aiming to conquer Italy, starting with Rome. Over the past decade, the maritozzo has evolved from a dessert found in only a few historic pastry shops in the capital to a popular treat across half of Italy, and even internationally. In fact, maritozzi can now be found in France, London, and Japan, where they have become a real trend.
They successfully enlisted the most renowned pastry chefs from all over Italy, including the legendary master Iginio Massari. Massari, known as the "pastry chef of pastry chefs," was the first to introduce Maritozzi in his pastry shops across the country. He has now decided to open a venue exclusively dedicated to Maritozzi, named Maritz. This new establishment, located at Corso di Porta Ticinese 40, debuted on Saturday, February 8th. It features a delightful counter displaying Maritozzi in various flavours. The new shop proudly bears the name Iginio Massari Alta Pasticceria and showcases not only Iginio Massari's mastery but also highlights the talents of his daughter, pastry chef Debora Massari, and his son, pastry chef Nicola Massari. Together, this new generation is vigorously carrying forward the esteemed family legacy.

The restaurant is open every day from Monday to Sunday and offers Maritozzi in a variety of flavors. These include popular options available at other Massari pastry shops, such as custard, chocolate, hazelnut, zabaglione, and pistachio, priced at €6 each. Maritozzi are perfect for breakfast, a sweet snack during the day, or as a lovely gift for friends and family. Due to their popularity in recent years, limited edition Maritozzi priced at €7 each will also be available, specially designed to celebrate holidays like Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Halloween. For the upcoming Valentine's Day, we will have a Maritozzo featuring a heart of melampo jam and raspberry mousse with candied lemon. These will be available at Massari stores until February 16th.
We can hypothesize that the location in Milan will serve primarily as a departure point and a testing ground for future openings. Nicola Massari stated, “Choosing Milan as our starting point is certainly not random. It is a city that sits at the crossroads of cultures and lifestyles, making it an ideal stage for experimenting with and launching new trends.” In 2018, we had the idea to reinvent the classic Maritozzo by reshaping it and enhancing its flavor with a custard filling. This revised version of the Maritozzo was immediately successful in our pastry shops. With MARITZ, we want to celebrate this iconic product of ours,” concluded Iginio Massari.
