Il Bacio - Italy's most famous Chocolate Kiss!

February is often associated with Valentine's Day, a time when many couples exchange gifts, especially chocolates. For nearly 103 years, one of the most romantic chocolate gifts has been the Bacio Perugina. This confection was created in 1922 by entrepreneur Luisa Spagnoli, who is also known for founding a famous Italian fashion label. Originally, the Bacio Perugina was to be called “Cazzotto,” as its shape resembled a closed fist. However, it was Luisa Spagnoli who developed what would later become one of the company’s flagship products, alongside Rossana sweets. Spagnoli was looking for a way to utilize leftover ingredients from other products, leading her to create this chocolate confection made with gianduia chocolate, chopped hazelnuts, and a whole hazelnut, all covered in dark Luisa chocolate.

 Giovanni Buitoni, a young administrator of Perugina and Spagnoli's lover, recognized that asking for a “punch” at a shop might not sound appealing. He suggested changing the name to the more romantic term “Bacio.” The shape of the chocolate was also modified, with some claiming it resembles a small breast. The turning point in the history of Baci came thanks to Federico Seneca, a painter, graphic designer, advertiser, and artistic director of Perugina in the 1920s. Seneca created the iconic image of a pair of lovers set against a blue background, inspired by the famous painting “The Kiss” by Hayez.
