The fashion world bids farewell to Rosita Missoni

The fashion world bids farewell to Rosita Jelmini Missoni, the Italian entrepreneur and designer who married Ottavio Missoni in 1953. She passed away at the age of 93. Their love story led to the creation of one of Italy's largest brands: Missoni. Known for its distinctive colors and iconic zig-zag patterns, the Missoni brand has achieved international success and is highly regarded worldwide.

Rosita and Ottavio Missoni married in 1953 in Golasecca, creating a renowned brand representing Made in Italy. Rosita, from the esteemed Torrani family of textile artisans, and Ottavio, an Olympic champion, began their knitwear workshop in their Gallarate home. Their first collection, Milano-Simpathy, launched at La Rinascente, and a key moment came in 1969 when they met Vogue's Diana Vreeland, opening doors in American department stores. The 1960s were vibrant for them, showcasing designs at the Gerolamo Theater in Milan in 1966 and at Palazzo Pitti in Florence the following year.

Three children were born to the family: Vittorio in 1954, Luca in 1956, and Angela in 1958. Their united image appealed to the public, especially in the fashion house's advertising campaigns. In 1997, Angela took over the creative direction of Missoni, while Rosita continued designing the home line. Despite 2013 being a challenging year, with Ottavio's death in May and Vittorio's tragic plane crash in Uruguay four months later, Rosita remained dedicated to the company.Today, the fashion house is preparing for Alberto Caliri to take over as the new creative director following the recent announcement of Filippo Grazioli's departure, who has left the helm of Missoni after just two years. Angela Missoni, the daughter of Rosita, continues to serve as President of the company Missoni.  The stylistic legacy of the fashion house will be carried forward in the name and spirit of Missoni's DNA, honoring Rosita's influence.
