The Costa Smeralda provides a stunning setting and a variety of challenging conditions for the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, which is one of the highlights of the Mediterranean yachting season. The 34th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup officially opened on September 8, 2024, with the Skipper's Briefing followed by the traditional Welcome Cocktail on the terrace at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The first Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was held in Sardinia in 1980. The regatta attracts a sizeable fleet of majestic maxi yachts to Porto Cervo, and it is organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and its president, the Aga Khan. The regatta is reserved for yachts over 60 feet (18.30 meters) in length and is organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of title sponsor Rolex and this year marks 40 years of partnership with Rolex. The quays in front of the YCCS are now home to the 44 maxi yachts, which was brought to live yesterday, with the official start. Known for the calibre of both the yachts and their crews, racing will take place against the breathtaking backdrop of the La Maddalena Archipelago.
An important part of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is the social events that take place after the races. Crews will meet daily in Piazza Azzurra for post-race refreshments. The Rolex Gala Dinner is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, September 12th in the charming village of San Pantaleo. The Crew Party will follow the next evening at Piazza Azzurra. Finally, on September 14th at 5:30 p.m., the prize-giving ceremony will mark the conclusion of the 34th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.In relation to Win Win's grounding on a shoal yesterday, there were no significant consequences for the crew on board but the boat will not participate in the regatta. Racing started yesterday - 9th September.
