"Divas and Godmothers: A Female Journey into Italian Cinema" Venice Exhibition

In Venice, there is an exhibition that compares the iconic actresses of the past with the actresses of today through a unique photographic display. The exhibition at the Excelsior Hotel in Venice features Sveva Alviti portraying Monica Vitti, and Virna Lisi reimagined in a pose by Vittoria Puccini. It's a blend of cinema and photography that provides a new perspective, allowing the classic stars to "interact" with the new talents of the Italian film industry. The exhibition includes images where Silvana Mangano is represented by Kasia Smutniak, Sophia Loren is "interpreted" by Caterina Murino, and Sonia Bergamasco is pictured in the likeness of Alida Valli.

During the 81st Venice International Film Festival at the Lido of Venice, an exhibition titled "Dives and Godmothers" was held at the Excelsior Hotel until September 7. This exhibition tells the story of Italian cinema through images of eight iconic actresses from the past, captured in shots from the Luce Archive and other historical archives. The contemporary actresses, who have previously served as godmothers in past editions of the Venice Film Festival, have reinterpreted the iconic actresses while dressed by prominent Italian fashion houses such as Giorgio Armani, Armani Privè, Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Ferragamo, Alberta Ferretti, Versace, and N21 by Alessandro dell'Acqua, adorned with jewelry from Cartier.

Photographer Uli Weber captured this celebration of the value of Made in Italy, highlighting the connectedness of fashion, costume, and cinema. The common thread in these photographs is the portrayal of iconic Italian actresses. Rocio Morales represents Stefania Sandrelli, while Serena Rossi embodies Claudia Cardinale. Vittoria Puccini captures the charm of Virna Lisi, and Anna Foglietta channels the enchantment of Mariangela Melato. Sveva Alviti translates Monica Vitti's allure into her poses. Weber's photo shoots took place at Cinecittà, an iconic symbol of Italian cinema known worldwide. This historic studio has hosted legendary film productions and continues to be a hub for contemporary cinema. The exhibition is organized by the Ministry of Culture and Archivio Luce Cinecittà, and curated by Undersecretary of Culture Lucia Borgonzoni and Cinecittà President Chiara Sbarigia.

"According to Chiara Sbarigia, instead of just celebrating and idolizing the great filmmakers of the past, we should engage in a meaningful dialogue with their work. The aim is to connect with the rich cinematic tradition and assert a direct lineage, passing the baton to the current generation. Italy has a strong tradition of winning Oscars, second only to the United States.
