La Posta Vecchia
La Posta Vecchia, close to Fiumicino airport and the port of Cittavecchia, is a fabulous location for a week-end break just 40 minutes from Rome (straight connection from Rome train station and can be picked up at the local station). La Posta Vecchia is a sumptuous, historic retreat on the sea; although it is currently closed until April 202. The Hotel is set on 15 acres of stunning grounds beside the Mediterranean. The family of Marie-Louise Sciò, has owned the property since the 1980s, decorated nineteen rooms and suites with the trove of Renaissance furnishings Getty left behind. It is a stylish boutique hotel owned by the same family that owns the famous Pellicano Hotel. With the small indoor pool and the spa, complement the seaside location. The private beach club and leafy gardens continue to feel exclusive and special. The property and its grounds offer a snapshot of Roman history, starting with the noble Orsini family who built it in the 17th century. It later served as a postal sorting office (hence the name La Posta Vecchia, which means "old mail") until U.S. tycoon John Paul Getty restored it to its former glory in the 1960s.
Pompeii and Caesar were first among the elite to recognize the cool and calmer atmosphere of this corner of the Thyrennian coast. Our stone pool has reflections of Roman decadence, surrounded by glass with sunlight playing on the water’s ripples. As you glide through the water you can gaze across the wide seas, like some Romanesque beauty anticipating someone’s return. The Hotel's Beach Club is open to non-resident guests in our “Treat for a day” program, including a welcome cocktail, access to our pool with sea front terrace, the caldarium and the tennis court.
The restaurant at La Posta Vecchia, The Cesar — named after one of the ancient republic's infamous consuls — is one of Italy's best places for a long lunch. The tour de force begins as he does astonishing things with sea bass, baby squid and crab, Piemontese beef and pioppini mushrooms, or pink breast of pigeon with black salsify.
Every day Chef Antonio is delighted to discover some special ingredients which he presents with gusto for his guests, it may be a white truffle or a courgette flower from his garden, close your eyes to taste the essence of Cesar, La Posta Vecchia restaurant. The food here is good enough for a destination meal even if not staying, and the variety is impressive. Dishes such as oyster and strawberry gazpacho, blue lobster salicornia and codfish tortelli with fish ink are creative and fresh without being overthought. Breakfasts on the terrace include fresh juice, baked pastries, eggs and, for those wanting to indulge, prosecco.
